IMCB Independent Fellow (IIF) Program
The IIF is designed for the most ambitious returning A*STAR scholars seeking an opportunity to start their independent research program instead of the traditional postdoc track. The purpose of this program is to identify and nurture, among the returning scholars', the future scientific leaders in Singapore and internationally.
Returning A*STAR scholars will be selected based on their achievements during PhD training, research proposal and a stringent selection procedure (see below).
The Fellow will be given a contract of 3 years with an expectation of a second 3 year contract based on the scientific evaluation (see below).
The Fellow will be supported with one research technician, adequate funds for consumables, lab space in an ‘open lab’ with basic facilities and two work-stations. Alternatively, if a PI with matching research interest has space in his/her lab, he/she may decide to provide the required ‘bench-space’ for the Fellow if both agree. The fellow will have access to all shared equipment and facilities of IMCB.
Evaluation and future prospects
Each Fellow would be expected to give a seminar detailing his/her progress toward the end of the second year with feedback given from senior PIs (including the selected mentor) on both the progress and presentation. The committee (and the Executive Director) will evaluate the Fellow’s progress toward the end of the third year.
A Fellow may be considered suitable to continue the program if good progress has been made and the project has future perspective. The Fellow will be given a 3 years extension (a total of 6 years) to continue with the program with another evaluation conducted at the end of this extension. A Fellow who has made excellent progress and is deemed to be ready for a PI position will be encouraged to apply for independent PI position in IMCB as well as other RIs of A*star or universities with the strong endorsement by the committee and the Executive Director of IMCB.
Application and selection
The returning A*STAR scholars who wish to apply for the IIF program should submit their CV, a 3-page research proposal and the names of 3 referees to: Ms. June Oh – firstname.lastname@example.org
Short listed candidates will be called for an interview. Each short-listed candidate will give a seminar on the work she/he has accomplished his/her graduate or postdoctoral studies and outline the future research directions. This will be followed by an interview by the committee and the Executive Director of IMCB.
