The Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), the leading biological research institute in Singapore, conducts fundamental research in selected areas of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, and medical-relevant fields. Research in the IMCB is currently being carried out in the following areas: signal transduction; cell movement and adhesion; protein trafficking and polarity; DNA repair and transcription; apoptosis; cancer; stem cells; immunology; zebrafish genetics and development; Drosophila neurobiology; yeast molecular biology; microbial bio-signaling; hepatitis and coronavirus; fungal pathogenesis; structural biology; and functional proteomics.
The IMCB is inviting applications from new PhD graduates and postdoctoral fellows with interest or experience in any of the above or related programs. Applicants should have at least one first author English language publication in a recognized international journal. Renewable contracts are normally for three years, and there are good opportunities for career advancement. A competitive gross starting salary is offered in the range S$42,094 - S$58,500 per annum, plus a housing subsidy for expatriates. The entry point depends largely on publication record and experience. Additional benefits include a settling-in allowance, air passage for staff and family, and group medical insurance.
Applicants should post, fax or e-mail their c.v.’s, stating research interests and the names of three referees, to:

PhD Students |
| |
|
One of IMCB’s mission is to train the next generation of scientists, to empower them to be independent researchers so that the manpower needs of the ever growing biomedical sector in Singapore will have access to high quality, trained scientists. IMCB has trained more than 100 PhD students since its inception in 1987, thus offering an excellent environment doing PhD studies. IMCB graduates are very much sought after and have consistently found rewarding positions in both academic and industrial organizations.
Currently, IMCB’s postgraduate programs are administered by the A*STAR Graduate Academy (A*GA). The AGS is a collaboration between A*STAR Graduate Academy (A*GA) and the Graduate Schools of National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. It offers a "4+2" scholarship - comprising a four-year PhD study tenable at either NUS or NTU, and a two-year post-doctoral fellowship (PDF) in one of the top overseas universities or research laboratories in the scholar's chosen field.
IMCB is one of the supporting partners in the A*GA program. As a firm believer in training the next generation of scientists for Singapore, many of IMCB PIs who hold adjunct positions at NUS are available as supervisors for successful scholar applicants (List of IMCB supervisors). Students are advised to check with their potential supervisors to work out project details before the application deadline for each intake.)

Team Leader: Computational Proteomics
|
| |
|
Vacancy: Biological Mass Spectrometry Group.
Mass Spectrometry provides a powerful tool for the large-scale characterization of proteins and their post-translational modifications in complex mixtures. Often called “proteomics”, the approach is less about mass spectrometry per se than an understanding of all aspects of the data analysis pipeline including database search algorithms, scoring methods, de novo sequencing and all that is implied by “inference”. Assuming good biological questions and appropriate sample preparation, a proteomics endeavor is now constrained more by data analysis than by mass spectrometry, and while there are many Open Source and proprietary software tools available, they are very much in development and only become effective when integrated into a workflow. To be successful a proteomics laboratory must have a strong systems and informatics component engaged in active research.
We are therefore looking for an unusual individual for a key position.
Team Leader: Computational Proteomics
You should meet the following requirements.
- You will have demonstrable ability in Proteomics software and data management, and an enthusiasm to contribute your own ideas. While not a mass spectroscopist you will be familiar with the structure of the data.
- You should have an understanding of the major database searching algorithms, how they work and what are their strengths and limitations. You will understand Bayesian methods.
- You will understand the current approaches in the key area of quantitative mass spectrometry, with and without the use of stable isotopes.
- You will have a bioinformatics background and appropriate programming skills: experience in systems administration will be an advantage.
- You will be international in outlook, and will have collaborated with leading computational proteomics groups. You will represent us in international steering groups on standards and data repositories.
- Your degree is less important than your ability, but we are looking for someone who can conduct original research in computational proteomics, suitable for a higher degree and for publication.
- You will have the ability to build and lead a small team appropriate to the task, and be able to communicate concepts in data analysis to those who may not have a mathematical background
The position will be funded by and be based in IMCB but your role will include actively working with proteomics groups in other Biopolis Research Institutes. You will be expected to work with and exchange visits with international centres for biological mass spectrometry to develop new methods of analysis.
