X-periment! 2014, July 18-20

For three days from 18-20 of July 2014, IMCB volunteers, along with colleagues from other A*STAR institutes, universities, etc. entertained kids and adults at the “X-periment 2014”. This is a part of the annual Singapore Science Festival organized by the Singapore Science Centre (http://www.science.edu.sg/events/Pages/ssf.aspx). It took place at the Marina Square Mall under a slightly misguided theme: ”Be the next rock star of science”. According to organizers’ wish, all participants may dress as “rock stars”, but in the end there was no one at the event even closely resembling Michael Jackson or Madonna. There was “The Dancing Scientist” Jeffrey Vinokur (http://www.dancingscientist.com/),  to support this idea though. As a matter of fact, some shy IMCB members agree to man a booth only under condition that they would not need to dress as rock stars. Hence here is a first rule in science: “Stay focused”.

For many years at these regular annual events, IMCB presented the booth focused on our fish facility and research using zebrafish. No wonder it was not easy to get enough people involved. This time around, we added to the story other model animals of the IMCB – Drosophila, which similar to zebrafish, was presented at the booth as embryos, larvae and adults for viewing under a microscope; and mouse, where presentation was limited to a poster and slides. One immediate outcome of such a change was the high level of participation from fly labs in this event. As a result, unlike some other institutions in which representatives spent all three days at the event from 11am-8pm, most of the IMCB participants were there for a 1-2 half day shifts. So as promised, it was just a little bit of work and a lot of fun to remember.
