IMCB participates in Singapore Science Festival 2011

X-periment! 2011, July 22-24

The Singapore Science Festival is an annual national event celebrating the dynamism of science, engineering, technology and biomedicine. Previously known as the National Science Month (titled Science.01 to Science.09 between 2001 and 2009), the festival is jointly organised by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Science Centre.

This year’s festival is also held in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary of Science and Technology in Singapore and kicked off on Friday 22nd July 2011 with the launch of X-periment!, a three day science carnival held at Suntec Convention Hall 401. Aimed at bringing the latest innovations and experiments out of the labs to the masses, X-periment! gives Singaporeans the opportunity to see, touch and experience science.

The Festival takes on a new focus and theme this year. In 2009, the aim was to encourage people’s natural curiosity by having them ask a fundamental question that drives all scientific enquiries - “Ask Why.” Last year, the organizers hoped to encourage them to go a step further and discover the answers to their own questions through simple experiments, research and first-hand observations; hence the theme, “Know Why”. This year, they wanted to remind everyone what sparked their curiosity as children and made them ask “Why Not?”.

On display at the IMCB booth at X-periment! 2011 was a tank with different strains of Zebrafish. Visitors had the opportunity to view (under microscopes) fish embryos at different stages of development. Staff from the Zebrafish and other labs demonstrated to both old and young alike the novelties and intricacies of Zebrafish biology, sporting the motto “Why not” on their T-shirts. (Please see Photo Gallery below.)

“I thoroughly enjoyed my participation in X-periment! 2011. Once again, the Zebrafish exhibit attracted an overwhelming crowd of interested visitors to the IMCB booth. My colleagues and I were thrilled by the enthusiastic response from members of the general public and it has been a most enriching experience. I would like to thank all volunteers for contributing to the success of this event and hope that others will participate in future.” – Vincent Foo

IMCB offers our thanks to the staff who gave up their time to participate in this event, reaching out to the Singapore community with their passion for Science. Special thanks goes to Vincent Foo for organizing the IMCB Zebrafish exhibit for this year’s Singapore Science Festival.
