The STAR Employee Award is to reward staff who “best embodies A*STAR’s corporate values: Action, Speed, Teamwork, Agility, Resolve and Integrity (“A*STAR and I”). This individual, should be an outstanding contributor, a positive influence on the organization, and a role model for all.”
Jonathan Loh is currently a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), and an Assistant Professor with the Department of Biological Sciences, NUS. His laboratory is interested in dissecting the regulatory mechanisms regulating cell fate changes, and developing novel tools in deriving reprogrammed and differentiated cell types. His lab has published impactful research in top-tier journals, was successful in applying for academic and industrial funding, has established clinical orientated studies and trained research manpower for the R&D sector.
Throughout his 12 years with A*STAR, first as an A*STAR scholar and now as an A*STAR researcher, Jonathan has represented the organization with pride. He has won several prestigious national and international accolades including the Philip Yeo prize, Singapore Young Scientist award, Singapore Youth award, Ten Outstanding Young Person (TOYP) Award, A*STAR Investigatorship award, World Technology Network Fellowship and the MIT TR35 Asia Pacific award. He has also represented A*STAR in presenting his research in more than 40 conferences locally and internationally. These would not have been possible without the generous opportunities given by A*STAR over the years (scholarships, funding etc). Thus, Jonathan has immersed himself in paying it forward by being actively involved in various A*STAR initiated activities, such as the Science Festival, A*STAR Scientific Conference, A*STAR graduate academy talks and interactions with scholars and the mentorship of 8 A*STAR scholars, serving as their academic mentors. On a lighter note, he also participated in the recent One-North Run where he finished a credible 13th out of a field of 480 runners for the 5km race. The Run aimed to bring the One-North community closer together.
Apart from his role in A*STAR, Jonathan is a strong believer of active citizenship. During his free time, he serves “Pro Bono” as the treasurer for the Stem Cell Society Singapore, on the advisory committee for the School of Chemical & Life Sciences, Singapore Polytechnic and as council member of the Singapore Association for the Advancement of Science (SAAS). From 2012 to 2015, he was on the organizing committee for the annual Stem Cell Society Singapore symposium. Since 2013, he teaches Advanced Cell Biology (CP2110) module for 3rd Year students in Singapore Polytechnic. In 2014, he has helped to develop the website for SAAS and is currently the webmaster of the SAAS website. He hopes that his involvements in these organizations will help create greater awareness for Scientific literacy and inculcating interest in Science among our youth, missions which are shared intimately with A*STAR’s.
Jonathan is exactly the kind of employee who deserves to be recognized with a STAR Award.
IMCB congratulates Jonathan on winning this year’s The STAR Employee Award.
